My introduction to video recording slow motion
Balloons, butane, and Ball of Fire
This was a test, so only the balloon filled up to half of butane. I lit my long-handled butane lighter, the light for barbecues, and slowly advanced to the globe. I'm not sure if there was any sound or not, I was too fascinated by the fireball that engulfed the arm in an instant, then vanished leaving only the smell of burnt hair, to listen. Hmmm, I think maybe you should come to a different exciting Notwithstanding that butane gas filled balloon!
Slow Motion Video at 1000 frames per second
David Fischer, a long-time friend of mine and still photographer and film director, and myself, were under consideration David in the middle of a session of slow-motion video. We were shooting footage with the Phantom HD high-speed video camera.
This camera can capture amazing high definition images at 1000 frames per second. When the video is played at a slower pace, say 30 frames per second, you have video ultra slow motion. Grand Vitesse We are also beta testing of software systems with the new user interface and hardware for next generation 444 GVS9000 2XU VTR which is scheduled to be released in January 2010.
Flight of a ladybug in HD
The combination of the Phantom and the VTR GVS9000 rolled really a breeze. The camera shoots in bursts four seconds (32 gigabytes of data) and capture continuously. This means you can set the capture time for actually start until, well, almost four seconds, before hitting the record button.
This is extremely important when shooting action that can be impossible to predict, as the flight of a sissy of a finger. Before capturing a scene that you can set the frame rate of 24 fps to 1000 fps, or even much higher if you do not need high definition resolution. Once you've captured his four seconds in just a couple of times to play again.
A simple slider to set the game speed back, then color-corrected and becomes the codec you want, or format, on the fly. The whole process is incredibly simple and efficient and really allowed us to focus on creative aspects of our meeting. Like finding a way to ignite the gas-filled balloons out ourselves wounding!
Phantom HD, GVS 9000, and ease of use
Use ghost with the GVS9000 2XU VTR 444 was incredibly easy. My experience with the video before this shoot was limited to a Panasonic HVX-200. Although I have been professionally shooting still images for over thirty years, I'm still very new in motion. I found using the phantom with the system GVS9000 actually be easier than shooting with the Panasonic!
Custom Soft Boxes and lots of light
A challenging aspect of shooting ultra high speed (slow motion) video is the lighting. To shoot at such high speeds frame requires a large amount of light. Most of our clips were shot with 10,000 watts of tungsten light.
Our main source of light was made to measure a soft box with five 2000 watt lights mounted inside. Depending on the shot, sometimes throwing an extra 4000 to 6000 watts of light in the background and / or add some lights 1000 watts of new to the subject of a light or an embossed effect of the border.
The calibration of the monitor and display of confidence
An important consideration is the calibration of the monitor. GVS 9000VTR The software provides a histogram, waveform, vectorscope and many more options to facilitate accurate exposure. It even offers the ability to capture RAW compressed format to see a visual difference in quality before saving shots.
Since we were using a dual monitor setup and go through the calibration process, the result was a rather large difference between our two monitors, and resulted in less than a comfortable confidence in our discussion.
It is worth mentioning that the exhibition is very important when shooting with the Phantom and the white balance is often a good idea. Fortunately, white balance and black are easy to execute.
Large storage capacity
Another characteristic of the VTR GVS9000 really helped our efficiency in production is the large storage capacity in a compact and portable. We have been able to shoot in RAW all day without interruption and without fear of running out of hard drive space. The configuration used is shown a storage capacity 4000 GB with hot swappable drives and RAID level 5 protection. The solution GVS can transfer large amounts of data at blazing speeds.
The extraordinary in the ordinary
Shooting with the Phantom was truly a case of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. In one case it was decided to shoot Tumbling Dice. I dropped a single die, from two or three inches tall on a marble surface. I had to fall from a height as low because if not moved an inch closer or further away from the camera, we could lose our focus.
The fate echoed for a moment and stopped. David and I looked at each other, agreed that there was nothing interesting about that particular part of action, but decided to play back anyway to check the focus. It was fascinating! Luck struck the surface marble, stood up and almost out of the frame, was presented with a slow, lazy spin, hit the marble appeared, and just stood there for what seemed to turn an eternity. Totally cool!
Water Balloons and women's hair
If it was a balloon of water bursting and leaving a tear-shaped body hanging the water, apparently frozen in the air, twisting cat to land on your feet and hair of a woman undulating in the wind, the phantom allowed us to see things we've never seen before. The VTR GVS9000 gave us the ability to quickly view our catches and make adjustments without interruption in our flow. It is difficult to pinpoint what important it is for both our creative process and the bottom line.
This experience is the slow motion a great example of my approach to stock video. Shooting video for livestock makes sense if you have passion for what your shooting, and / or you can take advantage of a case still adding video shoot, or in this case, a rare opportunity presents itself.
