Balloon Animals - An Abridged History
Everyone loves balloons and it just makes them more fun when they get turned into animals. I have a little girl who wants a big party every year, and to be honest I'm glad she does - I get to hire a twister! In fact, I have a regular balloon man who I phone every year to come and make wonderful animal creations for her and her friends. Balloons in general are a fun way of saying happy birthday, good luck or anything really, which is why I often send balloons by post as a surprise.
Being the curious woman that I am, I just had to find out where the idea of balloon twisting came from. To be honest, the history is a little cloudy with three or four different accounts floating around. The most compelling is this: Henry J. Maar, who was born with pleurisy, developed his lung capacity by blowing up balloons. By the 1930s he had become a magician. Whilst preparing for a show one evening in 1938 or 1939, he was robbed of all his magic tricks, but as they say, 'the show must go on' - so he improvised with balloons, twisting them this way and that to create animals. People fell in love with his show and because they were somewhat fascinated by his creations, the art of twisters was born! Maar went on to be a twister for years after, appearing at parties, circuses, shows and even on children's TV programmes.
Credit for being the first to invent balloon animals has also been given to Frank Zacone from Youngstown, Ohio, who did balloon acts during the 1940s and had done so for a while. Herman Bonnert from Pennsylvania is also known as being the inventor, and there have been references as well to an unknown person coming up with the idea of twisting balloons into shapes after WW2, when skinnier balloons were invented. Whoever it really was, I thank them for putting a 'twist' on the average balloon!
Balloons have always been a firm favourite with me. Some people like flowers, others like chocolate - with me it's definitely balloons. They always bring a smile to my face and the way they float makes me feel all happy (yes, really)! I love to get balloons delivered to friends or relatives and I hope that they feel happy when they receive them. Through my years of experience I have discovered that balloons from Interflora are some of the best; great service, price and delivery times. I would recommend them to anyone - it's just a shame they don't do balloon animals!
