The Art of Balloon Modelling

Balloon Modelling is a very popular activity which has become an art form in it's own right. Many people have tried their hand at one time or another. Packets of balloons with instructions on how to make simple models can be found in novelty shops and toy stores. They are often bought as stocking fillers at Christmas or as a fun activity for family gatherings and parties. Balloon modelling is a popular hobby but there are individuals who have developed their skills to such a level that they are able to make a living as professional balloon modellers. They can be hired to entertain at birthday parties, weddings, shopping malls, store openings, promotions and events of all kinds.

There are many makes of balloons available to buy. The quality of the products do vary and it is important to find the right balloons for the job. The biggest balloon company in the world is Pioneer who produce balloons of all shapes and sizes and whilst they are not the cheapest the quality is consistently good.

The most common type of balloon is known as the 260Q. It is sixty inches long and two inches wide when properly inflated. This is the balloon which is used for all of the basic sculptures. There are numerous designs available using just a single balloon. Some are very quick and simple others more complex.

Although modelling balloons can be inflated by mouth it is highly recommended to use a pump. Some entertainers do inflate by mouth which looks very impressive however it does require practice and this method can be dangerous. It is possible to sustain internal injuries using this method and is therefore best avoided. One common problem for beginners is that they over inflate the balloon causing it to burst when they start working with it.

After the balloon has been inflated it is shaped using special folds and twists. It is important to master the correct method of inflation and knot tying and to learn and practice the various techniques in order to become proficient in the art.

More elaborate balloon models can be created using multiple balloons. In addition to the 260Q there are other types of balloons which can be incorporated into the design to make even more interesting sculptures. The 350Q is similar to the 260Q but is three inches wide when properly inflated. There are also small round balloons, heart shaped balloons, donuts which are round with a hole in the middle, Geo blossoms which are similar to donuts but have a flower shape. There are some very thin balloons and others which are long and fat. All of the these are available in a wide assortment of colours.

Learning the art of balloon modelling is relatively easy as many books have been written on the subject. Instructional DVD's can be purchased from magic dealers and there are lots of how to videos on You Tube. An excellent web site to visit is Balloon HQ which is a gold mine of information.
